Many may not realize that our world system is derived from the Roman Babylonian system which continues to pay homage to ancient traditions and pagan deities. The most revered of those mythical gods is Janus. Yes, the same Janus that is celebrated during the Janus Festival now more commonly known as The New Year’s celebration. Yes, the same deity that January is named after.
In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames, and endings. From the coin pictured above you can see that this deity is the idol of reflecting on the past or what is behind and focusing on this future or looking forward. This is where the concept and tradition of New Year’s resolutions come from.
There are also terms used in our modern society such as being “two-faced” or having a “two-faced” personality or even “double-minded”. The water bearer is also associated with the pagan zodiac sign of Aquarius. which derives from the Janus two-faced water-bearing depiction and lore.
The most dangerous of these ideas and beliefs of Janus is the attempt at the parallel traits and infusion of the likeness of Christ. Janus is believed to be the first and the last…the beginning and the end among paganists. They also uphold Janus as their door to the spiritual realm. Today, ancient archways made in honor of Janus can be seen in museums and are on display as monuments in major cities worldwide.

As believers, we have to be mindful of our surroundings and careful in what we partake in. Unknowingly, the masses participated in The New Year’s celebration on Dec. 31st into Jan. 1st not realizing that they were participating in Janus worship, and inadvertently paid homage to the deity by being a part of what may have seemed like a harmless modern tradition.
